B.A.T.s are Cobra robots from the A Real American Hero series.

There is nothing more fearful than to have to face even one of Cobra's Battle Android Troopers. Though not particularly built for endurance, B.A.T.s can still take tremendous amount of damage and continue fighting. They serve nothing more than cannon fodder. As long as their trigger finger is in contact with gun (or their weapons-based end effectors still have ammunition), they'll do as they were designed until absolutely nothing is left but scrap. B.A.T.s can be manufactured cheaply, quickly, and en masse. To ensure their inexpensiveness, they aren't equipped with very sophisticated logic circuits. As a result, they react poorly to changes in battlefield conditions and have a potential to mow down foes and allies alike.

"B.A.T.s are dangerous to everybody. They'll shoot, bayonet, or kick anything in sight, Cobra Infantrymen don't like to be on the same battlefield with B.A.T.s. When a Cobra unit is losing a battle they will dispense B.A.T.s into the midst of the firefight in order to evacuate the area." Attributed to Hawk.

Although referred to as being similar to a machine gun with legs, some BATs in both the comic and cartoon continuity have been given very basic programming in order to carry out non-offensive tasks, such as driving vehicles in a fixed pattern and to serve as messengers delivering a pre-recorded communique.

B.A.T.s were deployed by Cobra on multiple operations including:

  • An attack on Action Force's London base led by Tomax & Xamot. However this proved to be a trap laid by Action Force both to test security and secure samples of B.A.T. technology.[1]
  • A bomb placed on London's Tower Bridge. Three B.A.T.s were wired into the mechanism to serve as simultaneously the trigger and guards for the bomb. However Sci-Fi laser rifle through the connecting cables, disabling the bomb.[2]

  • A Real American Hero (version two 1991)
Like every carded action figure of that year, B.A.T. included a spring-fired launcher.
B.A.T. Mark II was recolored in 2003 as an internet exclusive with a color scheme similar to the first. B.A.T. version 4 did not include the spring-loaded launcher.

  • Armor Tech (1993)
B.A.T. is renamed as B.A.A.T. (Battle Armored Android Trooper) for the Armor Tech subset of Star Brigade.

  • G.I. Joe vs. Cobra (version three 2002)
As with the theme of G.I. Joe vs. Cobra, B.A.T. is packaged in a two-pack with a G.I. Joe rival, Shipwreck.
Later versions of B.A.T. mark III (versions 5 through 8 specifically) are produced with a modified right arm able to use interchangeable weapons (similar to the previous versions), in various color schemes.
B.A.T. Mark III's recolored counterparts are chronologically versions 5-8, 12, and 14.

  • G.I. Joe vs. Cobra: Valor vs. Venom (version nine 2004)
With the previous version naming scheme cast out by the numerous retoolings and paintings of B.A.T. version 2 and 3, B.A.T. Mark IV is actually B.A.T. version nine.
As with the theme of earlier G.I. Joe vs. Cobra sets, this B.A.T. is packaged in a two-pack with a G.I. Joe rival, Beachhead.
Unlike earlier models, B.A.T. mark IV is right and left arms able to use interchangeable weapons in various color schemes. While his weapons are compatible with the earlier retooled B.A.T. IIIs, B.A.T. IV comes with different weapons (excluding his blade) and humanoid hands for wielding conventional weapons.
B.A.T. Mark IV's recolored counterparts are chronologically versions 10, 11, 13, and 15.
