As the G.I. Joe ground pounders and tank jocks debate who has it better, they all must face Cobra's anti-tank specialist, Metal-Head!

Detailed summary

Metal-Head
Rock 'n Roll, and Salvo riding in the Hammer, Steeler in the Pulverizer, and Hot Seat in the Raider. They quickly take down a few HISS II tanks and continue on their way. Steeler and Hot Seat make fun of the Joes in the Hammer, belittling their role and suggesting they are there only to get them coffee.

In Quagmarth, a neutral state, the Emir is having a secret meeting with Cobra Commander in a seedy bar. The Emir is not pleased with the price offered by Cobra Commander to buy back his country and calls in his assassins. The assassins are quickly taken down by Night Creepers, leaving the Emir vulnerable to another Night Creeper who puts a knife to his neck.

Meanwhile, Metal Head attacks the trio of Joe vehicles, destroying the Pulverizer and mildly injuring Steeler. Steeler chooses to ride shotgun in the Raider with Hot Seat, and they chase Metal Head into an alley. The Raider runs into a tank trap, and Metal Head destroys the Hammer before they can detour. Dusty, Rock N Roll, and Salvo are now on foot.

Hot Seat and Steeler find Metal Head and follow him into another trap, where he brings down an entire building on them. Dusty and the other two arrive and keep Metal Head busy while Hot Seat and Steeler are trapped in the Raider with blown-off tracks. The firefight intensifies, but a radio message interrupts the battle, ordering both Cobra and Joe to cease fire.

The scene then shifts to Cobra Island, where a group of Vipers is investigating a buried freighter and discovers a tunnel dug from the inside. They call in Techno-vipers and Toxo-vipers as reinforcements and find several bodies that appear to have died of botulism. Two bodies are missing: Zartan and Billy.

Other Notes

Errors

  • No errors known.

Items of note

  • First Appearances: Salvo, Metal-Head, Pulverizer, Republic of Quagmarh
  • The Pulverizer was sold as a Battle Force 2000 vehicle, so of course it doesn't appear until after BF2K is dead.
  • On page 14 of the story (page 18 of the book, counting ads), artist John Statema signed his name on one of the bricks.
  • Reminder: the people trapped in the freighter were Billy, Zartan, Tyrone, Capt. Minh, Firefly, Fred VII, Croc Master, Dr. Mindbender, Voltar and Raptor, as well as a few generic troopers, including Vipers and Iron Grenadiers.[1] The bodies are too ravaged by now to tell who was who, but at least nine of them are visible.

Dossiers

  • The dossier in this issue features Flint.

Real-world references

  • Metal-Head's targeting reticule is made not by M.A.R.S. but by Stark Industries, the company that regularly appeared in Iron Man.
  • On the piece of equipment the Techno-Viper is using on the last page, the name of renowned comic artist Jack Kirby is worked into the design of the tech. Kirby was known for drawing large, complicated machines, so the nod is fitting.
