The origin of Snake-Eyes' disfigurement.
Detailed summary
Snake-Eyes: The Tale Untold
Wild-Bill arrives in Millville to collect a portion of the Joe team, where members Scarlett, Rock & Roll, Stalker, and Hawk reminisce about the Middle Eastern mission that left Snake-Eyes with lasting scars.
The flashback begins with Snake-Eyes, Grunt, Rock & Roll, and Scarlett in a helicopter, which collides with another helicopter suffering from a blown turbine.
While Grunt and Rock & Roll escape unscathed, Scarlett is trapped and Snake-Eyes, in an attempt to rescue her, is engulfed in flames from the exploding helicopter. Despite his injuries, Snake-Eyes manages to carry Scarlett to safety.
With Snake-Eyes' vocal cords damaged, Grunt, Rock & Roll, and the bandaged Snake-Eyes proceed to meet up with Stalker in a nearby town. Their mission: rescue a hostage from the clutches of Cobra forces.
Meanwhile, Scarlett, who was knocked unconscious in the helicopter crash, wakes up and notices that her throwing stars have gone missing. Unbeknownst to her, Snake-Eyes has taken them to infiltrate the building housing the hostage.
Inside the building, Snake-Eyes confronts two Cobra agents, both of whom claim to be the hostage, George Strawhacker. He eliminates them and makes his escape with the real Strawhacker.
Later, during a debriefing session with Hawk, Strawhacker inquires about the identity of the bandaged man who saved him, but Hawk insists that it's a closely guarded secret.
As Hawk recalls the painful memory of informing Snake-Eyes about the tragic death of his family in a car accident, it is revealed that Snake-Eyes has two photos of his sister, one of which also features her fiancรฉ, George Strawhacker.
The connection between the two men is further emphasized as Strawhacker remains unaware that his fiancรฉ's brother is the one who saved his life twice: once in the Middle East and once in the Borovian Gulag.

Memorable quotes
"Thinking about Strawhacker, too, sir? He never found out that it was his fiancee's brother who rescued him that time in the Middle East?"
"He never knew it was the same guy who got him out of the gulag in Borovia - but that's another story!"
- --Stalker and Hawk are sharing flashbacks.[1]
Other Notes
Errors
- This story is set before issue #1, which introduces a few continuity problems:
- Wild Bill and Doc are on the mission before they joined the team, yet Hawk and Rock 'n Roll before recognize them and call them by their codenames.[2]
- In issue #11, Doc didn't know why Snake-Eyes wore a mask, but here he's shown to be present for the incident that caused it.
- All the Cobra forces present are seen well before they were actually created.
Items of note
- The Joes have apparently liberated Millville behind the scenes. Glad to see that major plot thread get wrapped up off-panel!
- Roadblock asks Stalker to "do the honors" at Arlington - we'll see that next issue.
- Who was in the second Joe copter?
Real-world references
- No references.
Footnotes and References
- โ Though Strawhacker somehow recognized Snake-Eyes when he was rescued from the Borovian gulag, this is not an error: Hawk says that he never realized the man who saved him in the gulag was the same one who had rescued him in the Middle East; that simply means he never found out who the man in the desert was.
- โ It's possible they were recruited precisely because they'd both worked with the Joes before.
