The article is about the first Nintendo Entertainment System video game based on G.I. Joe. For other G.I. Joe-based video games, see A Real American Hero (video games).

G.I. Joe was a one-player, side-scrolling video game released in January 1991 by Taxan and developed by KID Corporation for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

The character designs used in the game resemble those in the DiC-produced series from the early 1990s.


The game featured six playable G.I. Joe characters (one of which, General Hawk, was only available on the last level) that were armed with a melee attack and a long-range projectile attack that can be upgraded via power-ups. The player chooses three of the characters to use in a level, using one character to play with the option of switching between the three by going to the menu (Pause) screen.

The game plays out in six levels:

  • Amazon
  • Antarctica
  • New York City
  • Black Hills, North Dakota
  • Sahara Desert
  • Cobra Headquarters

Within each level is three stages. The first stage involves reaching the Cobra base at each location, fighting various Cobra soldiers and obstacles as well as a vehicular boss. Stage two has the Joes placing explosives at preselected areas. Stage three revolves around escaping the base, which ends with a boss battle.

According to the game's intro, it seems that General Hawk has simply finally had enough of Cobra and their evil ways. As such, he assigns GI Joe to take them down once and for all.
