In May 2008, IDW Publishing became the latest in the line of comics publishers to acquire the comics publishing rights to G.I. Joe.[1] What came with the new move is an all new continuity for the A Real American Hero series. Not much is known about the details of this continuity at this time save for a #0 book in October that will set up the series' debut in January 2009.[2]

The stories in this continuity are generally regarded to have a grittier take on G.I. Joe but does not shy away from concepts that are considered as science fiction elements such as the M.A.S.S.. While IDW has access to all characters to any era of G.I. Joe, the concepts generally revolve around A Real American Hero.
