- Toxo-Vipers are Cobra characters from the A Real American Hero series.
Being a Toxo-Viper is not what a Cobra aspires to be. In fact, it's a position meted out as punishment for the most discipline-challenged troopers. Working with hazardous substances is not an assignment anybody wants. The Toxo-Vipers' objective is to enter the battlefield and create a foul environment to cause the enemy to retreat or put them in a severe disadvantage. While the toxic weapons they wield is already a major turn off, it is their equipment that makes them most wary. It is the source for their disparaging nickname, the "Leaky Suit Brigade". While the suit is moderately airtight and resistant to most solvents, they are made cheap and only for practical purposes. Whoever designed the suits did not have protection as the highest priority in mind.

Toxo-Vipers are known in Cobra slang as the "Leaky Suit Brigade".[1]
A group of Toxo-Vipers were amongst the Cobras operating in the Arctic to maintain Cold War paranoia but they were defeated by the combined efforts of the G.I. Joe Arctic team and the Oktober Guard.[2]

A Real American Hero (1991)
A new version of the Toxo-Viper was released for the Eco-Warriors subset in 1991. Like the other figures in the line, if you hit him with water, he changes color to simulate "battle damage". Appearance: green helmet with red faceplate; purple shirt with green chest armor; red gloves; purple pants with green belt and anklets; black boots Accessories: purple "Sludge Viper" backpack; purple "Sludge Viper" laser pistol; dark green "Sludge Viper" water cannon and black plunger; black figure stand. |
Trivia
- In the 1991 catalog, the Toxo-Viper and Sludge Viper have their names swapped.
- In 1993, Hasbro and ad agency Griffin Bacal agreed to pay a $175,000 FTC civil penalty for misrepresenting the Toxo-Viper's "battle damage" on the card art.[3]
- Working names included Stinkbugs, Heavy-Breathers and Gas-Vipers.
