In the Gulf of Mexico, two Dragonflies and a S.H.A.R.C. were launched from G.I. Jane for a reconnaissance mission in the Florida swamps.[1] The recon team returned with information about Zartan's lair. The W.H.A.L.E. and a Dragonfly were launched to assault the lair. Cutter left other Joes in charge while he drove the W.H.A.L.E. They were backed up by a M.O.B.A.T. that arrived by freight train.[2] The W.H.A.L.E. was shot up during that mission so its crew docked in a local harbor to patch it up as best they could. They were working into the night when they were discovered by Destro and Firefly who were nearby since they were abandoned by Cobra Commander during the battle with the Joes. Destro knocked Cutter out and he and Firefly stole the W.H.A.L.E. Roadblock suggested to Cutter that he should take it easy for a while, but Cutter was determined to get back to the Jane and commandeered a local fishing boat.

Once back on the Jane, Cutter engaged her hydrofoils and gas turbines and sped away after the W.H.A.L.E. He was able to gain enough momentum that way to cut across a peninsula. It wrecked the hydrofoils, but the freighter was still sea-worthy. The short-cut allowed them to catch up to the W.H.A.L.E., which they swallowed up using the forward sea-doors, but not before Destro and Firefly abandoned ship. The W.H.A.L.E. was sabotaged, but Roadblock was able to hurl the detonator out through the Jane's ventilation system.[3]

After the Jane launched a W.H.A.L.E. on a mission in the South Atlantic, it was attacked by four missiles. Cutter activated the ship's radar-directed 30mm gatling guns which were able to stop three of them. The final missile hit the bow and caused a fire which Doc and Tripwire tried unsuccessfully to put out. The boat was then attacked by two Sea Rattlers. Deep Six was able to destroy one of them with a boxed up M.M.S. that was on deck. Doc and Tripwire were able to destroy the other Rattler with a gatling gun they were barely able to make operational. The Joes fought off all the attackers, but the damage was too extensive and the G.I. Jane sank. The four man crew was rescued by the returning W.H.A.L.E. The W.H.A.L.E. was in turn recovered by the Joes' new ship, the Flagg.[4]
