Cobra Commander reads about the Klesh Staff, a sacred snake-shaped staff in Sagebrush, New Mexico, and sends Zartan to steal it. Zartan decides to do it the same day Spirit goes to see his family, because the presence of a G.I. Joe member makes it "more fun". Zartan steals the Klesh Staff and, disguises himself as an old man from the town. When Zartan fails to translate "weasel" into Navajo, he reveals himself and leaves with the Klesh Staff in a buggy. Spirit reaches him using his Sigma suit. Zartan gets the upper hand in the fight, but when he's about to kill Spirit, Jason "J-dogg" Iron-Knife, Spirit's cousin, hits Zartan with his motorcycle. Spirit and Zartan fight again until a sandstorm blinds Zartan and allows Spirit to use a shock arrow against him. The staff is recovered and Zartan is put into custody.
